Stavrohori according to tradition originated from Koutsoura. But the barbarians' and the pirates' invasions forced the inhabitants to move up north, i.e. Vlanga, Tsikalaria, Arhes, Varvari, Strabodoxari, for safety reasons. Most probably it took its name from a Byzantine leader or from a twisted bow of a musical instrument..
The quick development after 1928 made Stavrochori the biggest Community of Sitia District. The picturesque little church of Agios Constandinos next to the magnificent winter waterfalls -which are the only waterfalls in Eastern Crete- is a very interesting place for the locals and the foreigners. It lies almost in the middle of Koutsoura and Stavrochori.
